Immaterial follows a Naomi, a woman isolated on a council estate who has exhausted the good will of those around her, as she copes the only way she knows how to. It’s a short that highlights the importance of community and support, and the effects of PTSD and addiction.

This marks Alexandra Healy’s short film debut as a writer/director. “Immaterial is inspired by my memories of growing up as a young queer person in social housing in Brixton,” she tells Short Stuff. “The film externalises a common experience among young queer people in that liminal space between adolescence and adulthood: growing up with dysfunctional ideas of intimacy, and searching for an oasis of love in people or substances. I hope the film contributes to a more compassionate conversation around addiction and trauma.”

Healy is also a Certified Intimacy Coordinator trained by SAG-AFTRA accredited Intimacy Directors & Coordinators (NYC), and brings nine years of industry experience in film and TV to her directorial debut.

“Immaterial is a delicate film that confronts some hard-hitting issues, and I’m proud of Alexandra for being so vulnerable throughout the creative process,” says producer Abbie Hills, a producer, writer and accessibility coordinator/advocate who runs the Dazey Talent talent agency. “Making a return to producing with a project like Immaterial has been so special.”

Immaterial stars Holly Higbee and Sam Greco. It was first shown in a Cannes market screening and was selected for Brighton Rocks, Femme Filmmakers Festival, Worcester Film Festival and Women X Film Festival. You can watch the trailer below.
