Megan and Shannon Haly release new queer comedy series ‘Fruity’

Irish filmmaking sisters Megan and Shannon Haly have released their new series Fruity following their viral teaser video. The series is written by Shannon Haly and directed by both Megan and Shannon (their sister Robyn is also involved as the show’s costume designer!).
Irish comedian and actor Madison Cawley plays Alice, who sets up a fake juice company instagram account to stalk her crush, only to find it becomes much more successful than she could have predicted. She ropes in her flatmate Clarke, played by actor and poet Carys Clempner, and together, the pair find themselves suddenly running a juice empire.
“Everything the Haly sisters touch is magic, and their determination makes me wanna push myself and make my own stuff,” Cawley says of why she come on board the project. “Who doesn’t want to be in something gay and fun?! I feel like as gay people we consume any media given to us because it’s still very few and far between, but…it’s mostly sad. Which is still great. But something light hearted and just fun and somehow happens to be gay, is a show I’d be a part of over and over again.”
The director duo decided to release the series themselves online via their social channels and YouTube. “Too often, queer creators are expected to wait for permission – for a commissioner, a streamer, or someone in a higher power to decide whether their stories are worth telling. We wanted to take a different approach. By releasing Fruity independently there are no middle men. It’s a direct connection between creator and audience,” they explain.

The show itself is fun, high energy, full of hijinx and humour. It was also, according to the whole crew, a joy to make. “Shannon and I genuinely couldn’t have had a more generous, creative and open group of people around us to help bring Fruity to life. It felt a bit like trying not to laugh in class the whole time. Everyone was working incredibly hard, but there was so much joy in that room, and I think that feeling really comes through in the series,” Megan says.
Alongside the three Haly sisters, the women-led crew also includes award-winning DOP Scarlett Gardner (Baby, Type of Rain) and producer Lia Gomez-Lang (Yamas, Agnes), with stills by Angelu Cayanan.
