Following the death of their estranged father, half-siblings Mara and Henri reunite at his remote home in rural France. When the slightly strange caretaker Lawrence shows up sharing stories of the siblings’ father, Henri’s cynicism eventually takes over and drives him away, leaving the pair to decide whether or not to follow the bread crumbs of truth Lawrence has dropped.

“While Threefold unfolds as a mystery, at its heart it’s a story about grief, family, queer identity and the experience of discovering somebody anew after they’re gone,” says producer and actor Macauley Keeper. “I was particularly drawn to the way the film explores identity across generations, and it was important to us that queerness wasn’t treated simply as a shock or revelation, but as part of a larger story about love, secrecy and the things families leave unspoken.”

The film stars French actor Yves Heck (Midnight in Paris, 120 BPM, The White Crow) and was shot entirely on location in rural France. Director Zac Ruzicka, whose debut short won Best Short Feature at the RTS Scotland Awards, explains why he was drawn to the project: “The story has this unease running underneath it, but the surroundings are saturated, beautiful and full of life. That tension became a big part of the visual identity: the film isn’t dark because the world is dark. It’s unsettling because something painful is happening inside a place that should feel warm, open and alive.”

The film was made in aid of Anna Freud, a leading mental health charity dedicated to transforming the lives of children, young people and their families. With the film exploring themes closely connected to young people’s emotional and psychological wellbeing, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to bringing greater awareness and understanding to these experiences.
