Nelson Lau’s debut short film is a horror that follows a teenager in a superstitious fishing village who begins experiencing haunting visions, forcing him to question his sanity.

“Inspired by my love for psychological horror and creature films, I wanted to create something unsettling, but grounded in human emotion,” said Lau about the idea for the short film, “I’ve always admired how the horror and monster genre can externalize what’s happening inside us—turning guilt, grief, or fear into something physical and terrifying.”

Umpam is produced by Malaysia-based Rain or Shine Pictures. Their last short film, Road to Harvard, won the Audience Award at Japan’s Short Shorts Film Festival, the largest short film festival in Asia.

Umpam won Best Short Film, Best Director and Best Actor and Malaysia’s longest-running short film festival, Mini Film Festival.
