Five months after the wide release of her documentary Hear My World – a film that shares the real-life stories of three D/deaf families and draws from her own experience with her mother, who was diagnosed with early-onset hearing loss in 2019 – Tyra Chuck has been nominated for Trailblazer of the Year at The Empowerment Awards.
The Empowerment Awards spotlights individuals and organisations making meaningful contributions to the disabled community. They are hosted by the charity Talks with MS, which supports people living with multiple sclerosis across the UK, with a particular focus on the Black community.
“As the director and editor of Hear My World, I’m honoured that the film’s pursuit of crafting stories that amplify D/deaf awareness and voices across the D/deaf community has been recognised for its impact on and off the screen,” says Chuck of her nomination. “I look forward to celebrating with my fellow nominees in March 2026.”
Structured as a series of interviews, Hear My World highlights the perspectives of D/deaf people themselves, contrasting their stories with those of their family members, exploring the joys, support systems, and challenges that come with a diagnosis.
