‘Sestra’, Lara Maria Kuppel’s heartfelt drama about sisterhood, releases on YouTube

Starring Anna Arthur and Mae Meadows as sisters Mila and Eloise, who are sorting through their family garage, Sestra explores sisterhood, from its inherent friendships to its situational fallouts.

Lara Maria Kuppel, an assistant director who recently wrote and directed her next short, The Booth, made the film over a year ago. She drew on her relationship with her own sister and “how bizarre it is that we were raised the same way, but couldn’t be more different to each other,” as she tells Short Stuff. “I wanted to see more sisters on screen, and wanted to celebrate what makes us who we are. There are elements of both of us in Mila and Eloise, and I’ve put real life situations into some of the scenes.”

Sestra was backed by a crowdfunder campaign, and Kuppel has now released it on YouTube so that every backer can see where their support went. “It wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s contributions. I was so overwhelmed by the enthusiasm,” she says.

“This film goes out to all the sisters, but I hope it also resonates with those who might not find their footing in their family. It’s so easy to feel like you’re the only one making sense, but I genuinely believe we can all learn something from each other’s differences, good and bad,” she says.
